At a recent london festival this barrel-aged, old vine 100% merlot easily outclassed the competition (including several more expensive saint-emilions), winning gold medal and trophy! owner phillippe carille trained in saint-emilion before moving just east of the famous region to next door castillon where he nurtures 35-year-old vines on sunny, south-west facing slopes. And 1999 produced some super ripe merlot fruit, hand-picked to preserve quality - and tradition. Rich, damson colour, a touch of cinnamon and mellow plums on the nose, clear ripe berry fruit flavour, lovely soft oak ... This is weighty but elegant wine, genuinely hand-crafted. Great with homemade pate, a farmhouse loaf and good english cheddar - or more formal dining. Top-notch merlot from a master! |
